Scientists at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory have successfully demonstrated a dual-use laser system capable of wirelessly transmitting power over long distances while also performing counter-drone missions, marking a step forward in expeditionary energy and defense technology.The demonstration, sponsored by the Office of the Under Secretary of War for Acquisition and Sustainment and supported by the Operational Energy Capability Improvement Fund, showcased how a fielded directed-energy system can deliver remote power and quickly transition to defensive operations.Researchers used a trailer-mounted laser positioned across an airfield to transmit power from a standard military vehicle to specialized receivers at a remote site. The system then immediately shifted to address a simulated aerial threat, demonstrating the ability to perform both functions without interrupting operations.“This was not just a laboratory exercise — we were building the pieces for what this capability could actually look like on the battlefield,” said Alex Grede, an electrical engineer at the Naval Research Laboratory.Unlike previous power-beaming demonstrations conducted under controlled conditions, the test was designed to evaluate performance in realistic environments. Researchers continued operations during challenging weather, including high winds and snowfall, to collect data on atmospheric interference and system performance.The project was conducted in partnership with Boeing and the Army’s DEVCOM Ground Vehicle Systems Center, with participation from Navy, Marine Corps and Army stakeholders.Officials said the technology could help reduce dependence on fuel-powered generators during expeditionary operations by enabling remote energy delivery to forward positions. The laser system used in the demonstration is already fielded by the Marine Corps for directed-energy applications.The test also demonstrated the system’s maintainability in field conditions, with researchers repairing a key component during the exercise and returning it to operation quickly.Researchers said future testing will involve Marines, Soldiers and Sailors to gather operational feedback and further refine the technology for military use.The Naval Research Laboratory said the effort supports ongoing development of scalable directed-energy systems designed to improve battlefield logistics, resilience and operational reach.
