Wing and Walmart announced the addition of seven new major metro areas to their drone delivery network as part of a broader expansion of what they describe as the nation’s largest drone delivery system.The new markets include Memphis; New Orleans; Philadelphia; Phoenix; San Diego; the San Francisco Bay Area; and Salt Lake City.The expansion increases the companies’ total service footprint to nearly 20 U.S. markets as they work toward a planned network of more than 270 locations aimed at reaching over 40 million Americans by 2027.Wing and Walmart said the expansion builds on more than one million completed commercial drone deliveries and existing operations in cities including Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston and Atlanta.“Our work with Walmart has shown that drone delivery isn’t just a novelty, it’s a service many customers count on multiple times per week,” said Heather Rivera, chief business officer at Wing. “We’re already working with many communities in the seven new markets, as we accelerate our progress to bring ultra-fast delivery to 40 million residents throughout the U.S.”Wing said its drones can travel at speeds of up to 60 mph and deliver packages by lowering them on a tether directly to customers’ homes, often within 30 minutes.“Customers expect their orders on their terms, delivered with speed and ease,” said Greg Cathey, senior vice president of eCommerce fulfillment transformation at Walmart U.S. “Expanding into new markets with Wing allows us to provide an innovative delivery option for customers, utilizing our vast store network to make everyday shopping and fulfilling last-minute needs just a little bit easier.”The companies said rollout in each new market will occur in phases and will involve coordination with local officials and community stakeholders to prepare for service in residential, apartment and commercial areas.Customers in eligible areas will be able to access drone delivery through the Walmart app or website, as well as through Wing’s app, once service becomes available.
