AUVSI and DIU Publish Secure Drone Procurement Guidance

The Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) announced the publication of a memo, with validation from the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), with procurement guidance and recommendations for federal government agencies; state, local, and tribal government agencies; public safety agencies; and private industry conducting sensitive missions using drones.

On May 16th, Michael Robbins, President and CEO of the Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI), testified before the U.S. House of Representatives on how first responders are using drones to aid in public safety missions and emergency response.

On May 15th, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization Act of 2024 by a vote of 387 - 26 following the U.S. Senate’s 88 - 4 passage of the bill last week. The bipartisan legislation reauthorizes the FAA through Fiscal Year 2028 and requires the FAA to issue a notice of proposed rulemaking for UAS operations beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) within four months.

The Commercial Drone Alliance (CDA) and the Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) have released a reference document providing guidance to the commercial drone industry on staying compliant with the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) UAS Remote Identification Rule.

The law, which was supported by AUVSI, codifies the rights of commercial and recreational drone operators, reaffirms the authority of the FAA over air navigation and aviation safety issues, and prevents the future adoption of unnecessary laws that specifically target drone technology.

On February 8, the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation passed the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization Act of 2023 by a voice vote. The bipartisan legislation reauthorizes the FAA for the next five years. Passage of the bill follows the House’s passage of their FAA reauthorization bill, the Securing Growth and Robust Leadership in American Aviation Act in July 2023.

Airports Council and AUVSI on February 8 welcomed the release of the final report issued by the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Detection and Mitigating Systems Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC).
