Gryphon Sensors introduces first operational mobile UTM system

By Gryphon Sensors | May 10, 2017

Gryphon Sensors LLC, a world leader in intelligent drone detection and innovative multispectral solutions, introduced Mobile Skylight at AUVSI Xponential 2017 this week in Dallas, Texas. Mobile Skylight is the industry’s first operational mobile Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) system and sets a new standard in Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) traffic management and drone security systems.

“We are excited to introduce Mobile Skylight and its unmatched versatility and air surveillance capability to our customers,” said Anthony Albanese, president, Gryphon Sensors. “It is designed for rapid deployment and enables a wide range of security and UTM applications.”

Drone security applications include:

- Airport security
- Critical infrastructure protection
- VIP security
- Embassy protection
- Border security

Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) UTM applications the Mobile Skylight will enable:

- First responders (EMS, fire and police)
- Precision agriculture
- Delivery
- Utility and infrastructure inspection
- Media and entertainment
- Mapping and surveying
- Construction and mining

Mobile Skylight combines multiple technologies, including an array of self-contained sensors, to serve as a complete mobile command center. The system is provided in a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van with four-wheel drive and off-road capabilities. It also integrates with third-party sensor inputs, and automatically records essential data for post-mission analysis and playback.

Using a dual-band mesh network, Mobile Skylight is capable of forward deploying a multispectral suite of sensors. Its integrated radar had been specifically designed for the accurate 3-D detection of low-flying, small UAS and general aviation at ranges out to 10 kilometers and 27 kilometers, respectively. The system has built-in target tracking and classification to help quickly identify cooperative and non-cooperative targets. It also tracks multiple, simultaneous targets, providing a comprehensive picture of the airspace.

Gryphon Sensors developed Mobile Skylight as part of Project UAS Secure Autonomous Flight Environment (U-SAFE). U-SAFE is an industry-leading, five-year UAS Integration initiative supported by the State of New York as part of Central New York’s “CNY Rising” plan. U-SAFE is forwarding the NASA-originated concepts of UTM and National UAS Standardized Testing and Rating (NUSTAR) to help safely integrate UAS into the National Airspace System (NAS).

Mobile Skylight builds on lessons learned from participation in NASA’s UTM Technical Capability Levels (TCLs) 1 and 2 demonstration events. The mobile UTM capability will continue to evolve based on NASA research completed during TCLs 3 and 4.

Gryphon Sensors is a wholly-owned subsidiary of SRC Inc., a not-for-profit research and development corporation chartered by New York state.
