The capabilities of manned and unmanned payloads in aerial systems can be greatly enhanced by the interpretation and fusion of data from multiple sensors. Sensing elements across multiple spectrums of lights, hyperspectral sensors, thermal imaging, and even lidar, each bring a unique perspective. Each of these technologies have been advancing at a rapid pace and their integration poses particular challenges in unmanned systems. We have found that intelligent sensors and on-board digital signal processing play an important role in enabling multi-sensor systems. In this presentation, we will discuss recent innovations in imaging technologies and discuss strategies on how to best deploy a multi-sensor solution with a specific focus on agriculture, infrastructure, and geospatial mapping.
