eneral Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. (GA-ASI) has successfully completed a mission autonomy flight demonstration using its MQ-20 Avenger jet equipped with the latest government reference autonomy software, marking a significant step forward in the development of autonomous combat aviation.The demonstration included a live engagement scenario between the MQ-20 and an aggressor aircraft flown by a human pilot. The event highlighted the maturity of GA-ASI’s autonomous systems, their seamless integration with mission elements, and the aircraft’s ability to independently leverage onboard sensors to make decisions and execute complex tasks without human intervention.The Avenger has served as a surrogate platform for Collaborative Combat Aircraft development for more than five years, both before and after the introduction of GA-ASI’s purpose-built XQ-67A and YFQ-42A aircraft. The recent demonstration began with mission planning conducted through a human-machine interface, followed by uploading the mission profile to the aircraft prior to flight.Once airborne, the MQ-20 demonstrated positive transfer between mission autonomy and flight autonomy systems, confirming the platform’s ability to dynamically adapt to mission requirements. Throughout the flight, the aircraft adhered to operator-assigned keep-out zones and keep-in zones, avoiding restricted airspace during all phases of the mission.A key element of the demonstration was the MQ-20’s use of a live infrared search and track sensor from Anduril to passively range a target aircraft. Using the sensor data, the autonomy system independently established a track, calculated an intercept solution, and simulated the firing of a weapon against the live target. The simulated engagement demonstrated the aircraft’s ability to close on a target using onboard sensors and autonomous decision-making, without human input. The simulated shot would have resulted in a kill if it had been a live engagement.Additional mission objectives included flying a predesignated route to a standard instrument hold, where the aircraft orbited before proceeding to its next waypoint, as well as executing routes commanded through heading, speed and altitude inputs. The aircraft completed all tasks while continuing to avoid designated keep-out zones.The demonstration underscores GA-ASI’s continued focus on advancing human-machine teaming and highlights the growing capability of autonomous systems to execute complex mission profiles using sensor-driven decision-making. It also reflects the company’s sustained investment in developing and testing next-generation technologies for U.S. and allied warfighters.GA-ASI has expanded its autonomy and advanced manufacturing efforts through multiple partnerships in recent years. In 2023, the company partnered with Divergent Technologies Inc. to support additive manufacturing initiatives and implement a fully digital manufacturing process. In 2024, GA-ASI worked with U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command to integrate and launch the Altius 600 loitering munition and collaborated with Dillon Aero on a live-fire demonstration of DAP-6 gun pods aboard the Mojave short takeoff and landing aircraft. In 2025, GA-ASI partnered with Shield AI to conduct two Avenger flight demonstrations using the Hivemind mission autonomy software.
